A lockdown at Kennedy Middle School in Southington was caused by a staff member mistaking a student for a person who did not belong in the school.

The Superintendent’s office said the lock down around 11:20 a.m. due to a suspicious person in the area.

Police said a  staff member saw someone walking in the hallway who appeared to be suspicious. They described them as a white male, 5’7” tall wearing a green military type jacket.

“The staff member erred on the side of caution and notified the JFK office. JFK Administration began school lockdown procedures. At this time a Southington Police Officer who was in the building on a school visitation assisted with the lockdown and directed additional Police resources respond to the school,” said police.

Officers swept the school and the grounds, including the adjacent construction site. During the search a student  who matched the  description of the suspicious person was found inside a classroom. The student was identified as the person seen walking in the hallway.  Officials made a second search, the lock down was lifted.
