One firefighter was killed in a fire at 598 Blue Hills Ave. in Hartford Tuesday evening.

Mayor Pedro Segarra said in a press release that a second firefighter suffered burns on more than 10 percent of his body and is being treated at Bridgeport Burn Center. Two other firefighters were injured in the blaze.

The first call came in at 6:20 p.m. for smoke in the house. There were two families in the two-floor residence, but everyone got out safely. It was a two-alarm fire.

Segarra spent time with the family of the deceased tonight, and said the, "suffering and the grief is indescribable."

He is described as a 48-year-old born and bred Hartford man. He was a firefighter for more than six years. His name isn't being released at this time as his family grieves.

The last Hartford firefighter to die while from injuries while fighting a fire was pump operator Thomas Fischer, who died on Sept. 15, 1974.

Gov. Dan Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman released the following statement on the tragedy:

Tonight’s tragic events are another reminder of the incredible sacrifice that our state’s first responders make on a daily basis. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the hero we lost tonight and those who were injured in the line of duty in our capital city.
