Today a press conference was held to ask the state to repeal the early release program for inmates.
Dr. William Petit, whose wife and daughters were murdered during a 2007 home invasion, was joined by former state Sen. Len Suzio, who is running to win back the 13th Senate district seat he lost in 2013, to denounce the program.
Suzio has made abolishing the early release program–which allows some criminals to be released from jail early if they earn enough points for things like good behavior and pursuing an education–a key platform for his campaign.
“The sentence that is given by the judge should be the sentence served,” said Petit. “If people think the sentences are inappropriate, then I think the appropriate remedy is to legislatively go back and review sentencing and sentencing guidelines, not to fairly convict someone, and then allow them time off.”
