New Haven police are investigating a home invasion that occurred in the Westville section of the city on Tuesday just after 11 a.m.

An elderly man was sitting on the back porch of his home on Fountain Street when he was confronted by a black man who vaulted the railing, according to New Haven police.

The intruder displayed a handgun and demanded the victim turn over his money.  The victim’s wife, who was also home, was threatened with the gun, while the victim’s daughter was able to flee to a bedroom and lock the door.  When she tried phoning the police, the intruder kicked in the door. Then, the suspect ran away without taking anything.

MILLS, JONATHAN

About three hours later, a woman called the police to report that she had seen a black man break into a vacant home on Earl Street. That’s when officers discovered Jonathan Mills, 39, of Hamden, hiding in a closet.

Police say Mills admitted to the break-in on Fountain Street and holding up the residents with a BB gun.  He then claimed that the victims weren’t who he’d been looking for, so he left without taking anything.

Mills is considered a suspect in two Hamden home invasions, as well as a car-jacking in West Haven.  He is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. He is being held on a half million dollar bond.
