An altercation at the Cheshire Correctional Institution sent two correction officers to the hospital on Thursday,
The first officer was stabbed in the neck with a sharp object by an inmate at around 11;50 a.m., according to the Connecticut Department of Corrections.
The altercation started when two inmates got verbally aggressive to correction officers escorting them down the hallway. More officers came to help, but one of the inmates stabbed one of the officers.
Both inmates were secured and put in detention at the facility, according to the Connecticut State Police.
A statement from Moises Padilla--a state correction officer and the president of AFSCME Local 387, the union that represents correction officers--said the officer was "savagely attacked" while he was trying to help staff subdue another inmate who wasn't cooperating. When other officers responded to try and help, a second officer was hurt while trying to stop the inmate from stabbing the initial officer again.
The officer who was stabbed in the neck was given emergency care on site, and then both he and the second injured officer were taken to the Waterbury Hospital Emergency room. The stabbed officer is in stable condition at the hospital as of Thursday night.
The facility is on lock down as Connecticut State Police investigate, according to the DOC.
The Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Squad responded to the incident and is investigating the matter. The State Police plan to submit arrest warrant applications for the two inmates involved, and the DOC says the offenders will be "placed in the highest level of custody management."
The DOC further said that although staff assaults have been on the decline, the Connecticut Department of Correction will review current practices and talk to staff and administrators about safety protocols.
