Man attacked by dog or coyote in Clinton

CLINTON – A man is recovering after he was bit in the face around 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

The Clinton Police Department says he was walking alone down Liberty Street with a flashlight when a large dog or coyote jumped at him from the woods.

The animal bit him on his face and then ran off.  The victim was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and released, although he is being treated for rabies as a precaution.

The DEEP Wildlife Division surveyed the area with Clinton Animal Control, but the animal in question was not located.  While DEEP notes that unprovoked coyote attacks are very rare, there have been reports of other residents hearing and seeing coyotes in the same area over the past few weeks.

Anyone who encounters wild life is reminded to keep their distance and report unusual encounters to their local Animal Control Officers.
