THOMPSON--A Thompson Boy Scouts troop leader is accused of sexual assault.

David Kress, 52, of Thompson, is accused of sexually assaulting children over 20 years.

Kress was the leader of Boy Scout Troop 66, and during his tenure victims and witnesses report that he sexually assaulted children at Boy Scout events, while they visited his home and at locations where he worked.

At the time of the assaults the victims were aged between 11 and 16.

The director of communications for the Boy Scouts of America, Deron Smith, sent the following statement to Fox CT:

“The behavior included in these allegations runs counter to everything for which the Boy Scouts of America stands. Upon learning of these allegations we took immediate action to remove this individual and preclude him from any further participation in the Scouting program.

These allegations remind us of the importance to be ever vigilant when it comes to the safety of our youth. The BSA seeks to prevent child abuse through a comprehensive program of education on the subject, the chartered organization leader selection process, criminal background and other checks, policies and procedures to serve as barriers to abuse and the prompt mandatory reporting of any allegation or suspicion of abuse. Because these allegations are currently under investigation, further questions should be directed to the local authorities.”

The statement also included a link to learn more about the Boy Scouts of America's youth protection program, which involves criminal background checks on scout leaders and youth protection training for all leaders. You can find that information here.

The Eastern District Major Crimes Unit--Troop D began investigating the sexual assault reports on March 3, and after 10 months gathered enough evidence to apply for an arrest warrant.

Kress is charged with three counts of employing minors in obscene performances. He turned himself in on Oct. 23 to State Police Troop D in Danielson, and he was released on $100,000 cash/surety bond. He is due in court Nov. 5.
