NEW HAVEN – Police said a Branford man with multiple warrants was arrested after crashing his car into cruisers and driving the wrong way and crashing on I- 95.

Police said Robert Salato, 42, of Branford, was observed by Ofc. Edward Douglas smoking heroin in his car at the summit of East Rock Park around sunset.  It was sundown and the park was closing for the night. Police said Salatto drove his car into the cruiser as he tried to escape. When Officer Douglas got back into the cruiser, it was rammed a second time by Salatto who fled  toward Hamden.

Hamden officers intercepted Salatto at the gate below where he got out of the car before getting back in and taking off. According to police, he headed to I-91 and through the Fair Haven neighborhood and on to I-95 and exited and reentered the highway in Branford.

State troopers positioned themselves at on the highway, and according to police, Salatto got off the highway and reentered the northbound entrance heading south. Officers observed Salatto from the opposite lane. Police said Salatto crashed into a van that was traveling in the correct direction and a concrete barrier.

Salatto struggled with the arresting officers according to police. He has outstanding warrants for his arrest from New Haven, Wallingford, North Haven and Guilford. He was charged with numerous motor vehicle violations, drug crimes and the assault on a police officer. His passenger, Amy Folland, 36, was arrested on drug charges.
