STAMFORD – The discovery of two human skulls at the Stamford Refuge Transfer Station Thursday, the day before Halloween, certainly seems suspect. But, it’s neither a trick nor a treat.

At about 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Stamford police received a call from the transfer station about some trash they had never encountered. The Stamford Police Detective Bureau arrived at the scene and closed off the area and documented it as a crime scene. A short time later they were able to confirm they were human skulls.

Tests conducted by the Chief State’s Medical Examiner determined the skulls were from a male and female, and that the deceased were possibly older at the time of death. But, preliminary tests showed the humans had not sustained a trauma before death.

The investigation revealed the skulls were discarded earlier in the day by a refuse removal business that picked up a pile of trash at the Fairfield County-home of a man who passed away recently.

The crew, from The Junkluggers Norwalk office, says the skulls were in a pile of garbage that included hundreds up DVDs and magazines on the occult and the metaphysical.

Stamford police are investigating whether these skulls were purchased by the now-deceased man online, which they say can be a lucrative business. Bleached, human skulls can fetch up to $2,000. Cops are also looking into whether it could have been a grave robbery.

The Medical Examiner’s office has sent the skulls to an anthropologist for further investigation.
