Democrat George Jepsen reelected as Attorney General

Democrat George Jepsen has been elected to a second four-year term as Connecticut’s attorney general, beating a Republican who accused him of taking too many companies to court and fostering an anti-business atmosphere.

Jepsen on Tuesday defeated Republican Kie Westby of Southbury and Green Party candidate Stephen Fournier of Hartford.

Jepsen touted his record of fighting data breaches and scrutinizing utility rate increases. He also worked with other states and federal officials in obtaining corporate wrongdoing settlements, including a $25 billion federal-state settlement in 2012 with the nation’s five largest banks over allegations of mortgage foreclosure abuses.

Westby’s platform included pushing the legislature and governor to rescind new gun restrictions passed after the Newtown school massacre and rolling back federal Common Core education standards. She said the standards were unconstitutional.
