WASHINGTON (AP)–Before Election Day Democrats had a 53-45 majority in the Senate, and they usually have the support of two independents. But today, 36 seats were being contested.

Republicans won all six seats needed to take the Senate majority, which they lost in 2006.

In the Republican-controlled House, all 435 seats are up for grabs, but Republicans were able to keep control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
