HARTFORD–It’s turkey time, and Foodshare is relaunching its annual Turkey and Thirty Campaign.
This year the food bank has received 19,896 requests for turkeys from families that utilize local pantries, community kitchens and shelters. The campaign is also working to raise $900,000 to help feed people who are served in the community year-round.
“What we want people to understand is that so many of our neighbors continue to struggle the other 364 days of the year,” said Gloria McAdam, the president and CEO of Foodshare. “While we strongly feel that every American should have a turkey at Thanksgiving, we also want to be sure they are not forgotten once Thanksgiving has passed.”
With just two weeks until the big day, Foodshare’s biggest challenge is collecting and distributing all the turkeys in time. Also, the number of needed turkeys has increased by more than 350 since 2013.
So far Stop & Shop has donated 1,000 turkeys, C&S Wholesalers has given 380, Hoffman Auto and CohnReznick have donated 200 turkeys each and Henkel Corporation has put up 140 turkeys and $30s.
