GROTON– Two sub base police officers were hurt after an unauthorized person tried to enter the Naval Submarine Base New London.

The suspect appeared in Hartford Federal Court early Friday afternoon. He has been identified as Gary Ray Brunache, 35.

He said he was trying to see his brother on the base and got agitated when he couldn’t get on. Brunache has an extensive arrest record dating back to 2008 with charges include criminal trespass, stalking, and violation of probation.

A spokesperson from the Navy’s media department says around 7 p.m. Thursday, the Brunache was “belligerent” and threatened an officer at the main gate with a knife. In response, an officer fired at him.
