GROTON--The man accused of using a knife to try to breach security at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton will be held until at least Wednesday when a detention hearing is scheduled at noon in federal court.
According to the federal criminal complaint against him, Gary Ray Brunache, 35, admitted to walking to the base and lunging at naval civilian police officers with a knife Thursday night.
Brunache claimed he wanted to visit his brother on base, and then got angry when the officers ignored his request.
The complaint states that Brunache stabbed Officer William Kephart in the right thigh; Kephart subsequently pepper-sprayed him. Officer Brian McCarthy fired three shots at Brunache with his service pistol, but all three rounds missed.
Fragments from one bullet, however, struck a third officer.
Security eventually subdued Brunache, and the two injured officers were treated and released from the hospital.
Brunache is charged with assault on a federal officer and assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
Brunache already had a criminal history, including misdemeanors for stalking and trespassing.
On his Facebook page it appears as though Brunache has a fascination with the military. There are several photos posted of jet fighters and other military aircraft.
