The New England Patriots wanted to thank their fans, but instead caused an offensive social media disaster.

The team was celebrating reaching one million twitter followers, when things went horribly wrong.

The team tweeted out to fans, asking them to retweet a message about their one million followers. Anyone who did that received an image of a Patriots jersey with their twitter handle replacing a players name.

But, when one user had a racist twitter handle, the automatic ‘thank you’ didn’t catch it.

The tweet was deleted an hour later and the team apologized.

Many people still criticized the team and a lot of angry tweets were fired back.

As the team learned, the answer to Michelle’s question is “a lot.”
