NEWTOWN–It’s open season on deer in Connecticut for hunters with shotguns and rifles.
Hunters are only allowed to use shotguns on designated state land, while rifle hunting is permitted on private property that is at least 10 acres.
Hunters are also required to wear 400 square inches of fluorescent “blaze” orange above the waist which is visible from all sides.
It’s illegal to hunt with, carry or shoot a loaded firearm within 500 feet of a home.
Hunters in Connecticut can kill two deer per season, and only one of them can be a buck. But, due to overpopulation in Fairfield County, hunters there can take an additional two does for a total of four deer.
There are plenty of deer in Connecticut, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to spot in places where they can be hunted.
“I’ll go out here, pitch dark, come home four hours later, and there’s one standing at the top of the driveway,” Howard Greene said after finishing up hunting at Paugussett State Forest in Newtown.
Firearms-deer-hunting season ends Dec. 9.
