GROTON- Authorities responded to the Navel Submarine Base New London in Groton after a bomb threat was called in on Saturday afternoon.

Naval officials say the call came in around 1 p.m. Security and public safety teams responded to building 87 at the base, according to a release on the naval bases Facebook page.

Officials at the base increased security measures in response to the reported threat. The base’s public safety and security teams evacuated the building and local authorities were notified. A State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team also responded.

After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat to the base and the threat called in appears to be a hoax.  The base has since been re-opened and the limited access to the base has been lifted.

Access to the base was restricted to essential personnel and Gate 1  was only allowing out-bound traffic.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is currently  investigating the incident.
