HARTFORD--It is part of a worldwide push to take a step back from the holiday rush by paying it forward. Using the hashtag "Giving Tuesday," thousands of charities are part of a global movement to engage the public to donate to their cause.

Among the dozens of charities who are involved in Giving Tuesday locally is Habitiat for Humanity Hartford. "After Cyber Monday and Black Friday--now is the time to spend on your community," said Jason Montgomery, Hartford Habitat's social media director."

Giving Tuesday began in 2012 and was the brainchild of the 92nd Street Y in New York, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. The group's website boasts that 10,000 charities have signed on to try and benefit from donors' goodwill. Most donations are sent to various charities online or by smartphone.

Marie McNamara, the individual engagement manager at Hartford's Habitat for Humanity, said, "It is a social media blitz for non-profits to raise funding for awareness for their mission."
