GROTON–The U.S. Navy has awarded a $44.5 million contract modification to General Dynamics’ Electric Boat subsidiary, according to General Dynamics’ website.

The contract is for the company to perform non-nuclear maintenance work for submarines that port at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. The company already had the contract to do the work since December 2012, but the modification allows Electric Boat to keep operating the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative at the base. This includes providing a wide range of overhaul, repair and modernizations services for nuclear submarines, floating dry-docks, support and service crafts and other equipment.

About 270 employees from Electric Boat work for this contract.

The contract has the potential to be worth $222.3 million total over five years.
