NORWALK–The Norwalk Police Department lost a member of the family on Wednesday when Nomak passed away, according to the Norwalk Police Department’s Facebook page.

Nomak was a retired police service dog who served with the department for six years, from May 2006 to January 2012. During that time, Nomak aided in several narcotics arrests. He also helped to aprehend a dangerous man armed with a butcher knife that chased an ex-girlfriend into her apartment. The man fled when she called police, but Nomak found him still armed with the knife.

Nomak was paired with Officer Andy Kovlakas, and the two were named department officers of the month in May 2007. After retirement, Nomak went to live with Kovlakas and his family.

Nomak died while in Kovlakas’ arms on Wednesday after a battle with myelopathy.
