SUFFIELD--A daily routine cost a Suffield teenager his life.

Police said Kevin Vitale, 17, was getting has mail on the other side of Mapleton Avenue Wednesday night, and as he crossed back over to get home an SUV struck him.

It was snowing and dark on the road.

Police said the driver stopped and has been cooperating with the investigation.

At Suffield High School, where Vitale was a junior, grief counselors were on hand. Students said friends decorated Vitale's locker at school to help cope and to honor his memory.

"In school we had this big paper and everything and we were signing and saying rest in peace Kevin and anything nice we could say about him because the whole school is honestly destroyed about it," Dennis Akpinar, a senior at the school, said.

Students plan to wear Boston sports apparel--particularly for the Bruins, Vitale's favorite team--on Friday to also honor his memory.

Police said it is too early to know if charges will be filed in the accident.
