Two Connecticut theaters to show ‘The Interview’

HARTFORD — Good news for those of you hoping to see Sony’s “The Interview.”

The premiere is back on at about 300 independently-owned theaters in the United States on Christmas Day.

Two of the theaters right here in Connecticut will be showing the movie, according to a post on the movie’s Facebook page. In Hartford, it will be shown at the Spotlight Theatres Front Street Stadium. In Waterbury, it will be shown at the Apple Cinemas Waterbury 10.

Sony Pictures announced on Tuesday the controversial comedy will run “in a number of theaters on Christmas Day.”

Last week hackers threatened violence against theaters showing the movie
the nation’s largest theater chains dropped the film. Sony canceled the film’s release altogether, drawing widespread criticism, including from President Barrack Obama.

“It seemed like they sort of pulled the movie prematurely. A lot of people didn’t really agree, and it was understandable a lot of the larger theater chains didn’t want show it, but that didn’t mean nobody wanted to show it,” said Tyler Pulsifer, the theater manager for Spotlight Threatres.

Spotlight Threatres on Front Street in downtown Hartford is planning to show four screenings of “The Interview” on Christmas, and five each day starting this Friday. Pulsifer says the the cinema gotten nearly 100 requests for tickets.

The movie was also released Wednesday afternoon for purchase on YouTube and other streaming websites.

Many moviegoers we spoke with say they’re even more interested than before all the hoopla started. “I probably want to see it more now because all the hype about it,” said Joseph Berthiaume of Willimantic.

Another local resident didn’t want to change his plans based on threats from others. “I don’t think it’s right to cave into the pressure, especially from hackers,” said Rajiv Ranjan of Vernon.

The FBI is warning theaters showing the movie to be aware of any threats.

The staff at the Spotlight Theaters is preparing for any possible emergency situation. “We are prepared for everything. We will have police officers here, we will be meeting with people and the theater will be toured and checked for safety,” said Pulsifer.

Pulsifer says the theater plans to show the movie for the next couple weeks, and possibly longer if ticket sales remain high.
