SHELTON —  Police have arrested a suspect in an armed robbery and police chase that injured a Shelton police officer.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, a man showed a gun to the cashier at Cumberland Farms on River Road and demanded money, police said.

A Shelton police officer was conducting a routine check of the Cumberland Farms at the same time. A few customers flagged down the officer and informed him of the attempted robbery.

The officer saw the suspect and ordered him to stop.

The suspect ran into the woods nearby and the officer heard a gunshot while running after him.

The suspect was identified as Valentine Rodriguez, 32 of Bridgeport. He was arrested and charged with Robbery, Theft of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Discharged of a Firearm, Interfering with an Officer, and Larceny.

Rodriguez is being held on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court Wednesday.

The officer was treated and released for injuries sustained during the chase.
