HARTFORD — Lawmakers and state leaders are calling for a federal review of Connecticut Light & Power’s rate hike.
According to Sen. Richard Blumenthal, CL&P and United Illuminating have the first and second highest fixed charge in the region. Blumenthal also said there is a “troubling trend nationwide” of utility companies charging customers more.
The monthly charge for most residential customers in Connecticut is $16 a month, regardless of how much energy they use.
CL&P asked for an increase to $25.50 a month, but state regulators said they would only allow an increase to $19.25 a month.
Sen. Blumenthal is asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chair Cheryl LaFleur to review this fixed charge and create a national policy on electricity rate increases.
Blumenthal and state Consumer Counsel Elin Katz will appear at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford on Tuesday afternoon to elaborate on this message.
