State Sen. Ernest Newton

HARTFORD — The trial for former Bridgeport State Senator Ernie Newton will begin Tuesday morning in Hartford Superior Court.

Newton is accused of campaign finance fraud and larceny in connection with his failed 2012 state senate run.

The prosecution alleges Newton submitted false documents to obtain more than $80,000 in state campaign funds.

Newton’s attorney, Darnell Crosland, said he is subpoenaing Gov. Dannel Malloy to testify next week about the costs incurred to prosecute Newton over the last two years.

Crosland called the lawsuit an “expensive witch hunt” that taxpayers cannot afford.

Newton has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Newton is a three-time convicted felon who served five years in prison for bribery in 2005.
