HARTFORD – Police served warrants in an early morning operation on Maple Avenue and found children in an apartment with guns and drugs.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley said in a tweet that operations were being carried out at 262 Maple Ave., Thursday morning. He said firearms were recovered and the area was secure. Later he tweeted that seven children–aged 3 to 15–were in the apartment at the time. He said the conditions in the home were questionable, and DCF was notified.

Detectives were able to obtain information that there were several firearms and narcotics “stashed” inside the apartment. A search of the apartments interior revealed three firearms, numerous rounds of live ammunition, crack cocaine, marijuana and money.

The target of the search warrant, Joxell Mendez, 25, of Hartford was placed under arrest for various firearm and narcotics charges.

He is being held on bond. Police say Mendez is a convicted felon with 13 previous arrests in Hartford.
