FAIRFIELD – Police arrested a man after a traffic stop revealed there was a radioactive device in the vehicle. The car was initially pulled over for having mismatched tags.
Police closed a section of Kings Highway when a Troxler Gauge–a radioactive device that monitors moisture levels in soil for construction projects–was found in car’s trunk. King’s Highway, also known as Route 1, was closed between Villa Avenue in Fairfield and Dewey Street in Bridgeport. It has since reopened.
Fairfield police said three men were inside the vehicle that was pulled over.
After police found the suspicious device in vehicle the fire department was called in and tested it and determined it was emitting low levels of radiation.
State police were called to scene and determined device was a soil density monitor. DEEP also responded to the incident.
The reason a mans was arrested is because police say the device should not have been transported in a passenger vehicle. Fairfield police have contacted company that owns machine and said they came to the scene to retrieve it.
One man in the car said it belonged to his brother.
One man was taken into custody – the status of two other in vehicle is not known.
