Weather Map 1-17

Freezing Rain Advisory for Fairfield and New Haven Counties from 3 AM until 11AM Sunday morning!

Expect light freezing rain/drizzle to potentially cause very slick roads early Sunday morning when temperatures will still be in the upper 20s to near freezing, across parts of Connecticut, particularly in Fairfield and New Haven Counties because the light precipitation will move into that region first then gradually lift northeast into the Hartford Area by mid morning .  If you don't have to drive early Sunday stay off the roads until mid-late morning when temperatures rise well above freezing.  Keep in mind, even if you see your thermometer read a bit above freezing, for example around 33° or 34°; the light rain could still freeze on contact because the ground is very cold.  Expect the steady heavier rain to develop over the region by time those temperatures rise in the mid-upper 30's by midday and near 40° by evening.   The rain will taper off toward midnight early Monday which could end with a few snow flakes but no accumulating snows are expected.

Just when you thought we were out of the woods with the freezing rain, another issue may arise with the heavy rain.  That is potential flooding associated with upwards of 1.0"-1.5" of rain within 12 hours on top of the hard frozen ground.  Since the water has nowhere to go but run off; there may be some poor drainage and road flooding in many areas.

This week will be cold and mostly dry with the chance for a weak storm that could deliver light snow by the middle of the week.  This weak storm is called an "Alberta Clipper", which typically only delivers an inch or two of snow.
