Celebrating Martin Luther King’s Legacy

Connecticut did its part to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the annual celebration of the civil rights leader's birthday.

His dream was celebrated from local towns, to the state Capitol.

At West Hartford Town Hall, the 19th celebration of the day took place. One of the speakers was Kaitlyn Jones, a junior at Conard High School. She talked about how Dr. King inspired her, "I think he's influenced me in almost everything I’ve done,” said Jones.

At the state Capitol, the memory of Dr. King and the fight for equality and justice was celebrated on this day of service. State and community leaders joined together to listen to speakers and sing.

“I ask you, everyone sitting here today, what is in your heart? " Cheryl Sharp, the deputy director for the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, told the crowd. “Equality, the need for it? Peace?  Honor?"

More than fifty years after King’s iconic speech, his powerful words were echoed throughout the halls of the state Capitol, as his “I Have a Dream” speech was recited.
