NEW HARTFORD- Think adults can’t improve their skill on the hill? Think again! The popularity of a women’s club at Ski Sundown is proving that folks can finesse their form at any stage or age.

“It’s all female instructors with female skiers,” explains ski school Director Jon Chasson. “For those who want to improve their abilities, they get better. For those who want a social two hours every week, it’s good for them, as well.”

Oftentimes, skiers take a break from the sport and need a refresher course. “I have three small boys. They all ski faster than me and I need to keep up with them,” says Dawn Carroll of New Hartford.

For the daring athletes, Ski Sundown is debuting an ambitious route down the
mountain. “We have a new trail, Satan’s Stairway. It’s a double-black diamond,” says Chasson. “It’s a steep run and a challenge.” Trails at Sundown are well-groomed, with good coverage. “The snow has been incredible this year. I know no one has it in their backyard but the conditions have been fantastic,” he adds.

“They get into their comfort zone. They get bad habits,” says instructor Rebecca Briggs.

In late January, members from the past 15 years are meeting for a reunion. “They are coming from Arizona, Colorado, Florida,” says Chasson, noting that many women have seen each other through life’s milestones.

Rugar has made some incredible friendships over the years: “It all started here a Sundown!”

Keep the women’s club -- which meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 a.m. -- in mind for next season. Currently, Ski Sundown offers four different group lessons on weekdays and five options each day on weekends. Click here for more information.
