DENVER, Colo. — A small Denver bakery has grabbed national attention, after one man didn’t get the cake he wanted.

The controversy all started back in March 2014. A man walked into Azucar Bakery and asked for a Bible-shaped cake with a gay slur written on it.

“The customer wanted us to draw two males holding hands with a big ‘X’ on them,” owner Marjorie Silva told KDVR. “We never refuse service. But we did feel it was not right for us to present hateful words or images about human beings.”

“I just want to make cake for happy people,” Silva said. “I’m Christian. I support Christians. We make a lot of Christian cakes. But this just wasn’t right.”

The baker said the customer was “very pushy and disruptive,” asking her to bake a cake with an anti-gay message she still won’t say out loud.

Silva said she offered to make a blank cake so the customer could do whatever he wanted with the frosting.

The man declined, Silva said, and instead told the baker she “needed to talk to an attorney about this.”

Silva said she told the customer she would make the cake with a blank Bible page so that he could write whatever he wanted inside. She said she even offered to give the man an instrument to write the words himself.

Fast forward to this year, when Silva was notified by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) that a religious discrimination complaint has been filed against Azucar Bakery.

The story has sparked interest from all around the world. People all over are now showing support for Azucar Bakery, messages have started flowing in on the shop’s Facebook page.

This isn’t the first cake controversy for Denver.  A very similar incident that took place inside a Lakewood bakery in December of 2013.
