RYE, N.Y.- Two people from Connecticut were struck and killed after being involved in an accident on I-95 Monday afternoon. New York State Police were called to the scene near exit 22 just after 1 p.m. for a minor property damage accident involving two cars. When police arrived, the two drivers were standing outside of their cars, off the roadway, when another car lost control and struck both vehicles and both drivers.

Kayla Ann Donnelly Smith, 22, of Hamden  and Winter K. Krzysztof, 61, of Hartford were killed instantly. The driver, Tai L. Zhao, 46, of Flushing, NY, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Zhao’s vehicle also struck a commercial bus, which sideswiped another northbound vehicle causing minor damage. No other injuries were reported.

On its Facebook page, the Southern Connecticut State University cheerleading team honored Donnelly-Smith with pictures and a heartfelt post.
