NEW HAVEN -- A woman in her forties is dead after being shot several times on Saturday morning. The shooting happened at 66 Second Street shortly after 1:30 a.m. When police arrived, they located the victim, Mary Townsend, 48, of New Haven outside near the back of the home.

She had several gunshot wounds to the torso. Detectives have found several bullet casings in the snow.

According to police, they are investigating a possible connection between the homicide on Second Street to a shooting in West Haven. The possible link is a vehicle that a witness identified at the scene, which New Haven Police lost sight of during a pursuit.

Police later located the vehicle, which had crashed on Gretta Street in West Haven.

The male driver of that vehicle was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries are considered to be serious. Officers are detaining the man until they can conduct an interview.

"At this time, detectives are in the beginning stages of their investigation. The pursuit and homicide have not been confirmed to be connected," said Officer David Hartman.
