NEW YORK–Well-known media columnist David Carr died on Thursday night at the age of 58, according to The New York Times.
Carr was a longtime Times employee and most recently managed the Media Equation column. He joined the paper in 2002, according to his obituary. Last year he also became a part-time professor at Boston University.
In 2008 Carr published a memoir called “The Night of the Gun” in which he discussed his history with addiction and recovery.
Before joining the Times, Carr was a contributing writer for The Atlantic Monthly and New York magazine. He also was a media writer for news website Inside.com.
Carr served as editor of the Washington City Paper, an alternative weekly in Washington, D.C. He also was editor of a Minneapolis-based alternative weekly called Twin Cities Reader.
