PLAINVILLE--Police say a car crashed into a Yankee Gas box on Bradley Street and caused a "large-scale" natural gas leak near Route 177 in Plainville around 9 p.m. on Friday.

The gas had to be turned off, and several homes were evacuated, according to Sgt. Michael Bisnov.

Also, CL&P was reporting that 755 customers were without power, but it was restored for all in less than an hour. Police say it was due to downed wires, and that the car may have hit a pole.

The vehicle came to rest on a "private residential structure" believed to be a shed, Bisnov said.

Police, fire, power and natural gas officials all responded to the incident around 9 p.m.

The driver is expected to be okay, according to Bisnov.
