NEW HAVEN — After people were turned away from voting on Election Day 2014 in New Haven, Friday officials will meet to discuss how future problems can be prevented.

It was the first time where people should have been able to register to vote and then cast their ballot on election day, but not everyone got that chance. Staffers had to turn away people, many of those didn’t get to register or vote, and some gave up all together because lines were so long. The City of New Haven low balled the number of people it thought would want to register and then vote. Staffers were overwhelmed with trying to get people registered and before they knew it the polls closed at 8 p.m.

The city said about 100 people did not get to vote, but it did accommodate 600 people. Friday, the Secretary of the State will give New Haven a citation for being the city on top with the number of people it was able to successfully register on Election day.

Mayor Toni Harp will accept the citation and along with the town clerk and registrars of voters, they will has out what could be improved going forward.
