dress color

White and gold or black and blue?

That simple question gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "the great debate" on Thursday night.

It all started on Tumblr when a person by the name of "Swiked" asked friends to help figure out what color the dress was.

Then it spread across Twitter, helped largely by Buzzfeed. "Swiked" even updated the post on Tumblr to say she's gained 2,000 followers in a matter of hours.

After about two hours a Buzzfeed reporter claimed to have solved the question. A writer from the website named Claudia Koerner said she asked a post-production supervisor friend in Los Angeles to analyze the photo. "Ben" said that the photo was taken by a camera phone in bad light, which casts the "whites in a blue tone and mutes the gold to a darker color. People who see blue and black are seeing the photo at face value. People who see gold and white are compensating to the photo's lighting and aesthetic."

"Ben" edited the photo to take the blue-toned light out, and it looked like this.

Here's the original Tumblr thread that started the great debate.
