Katharine Zaleski heads up the website PowerToFly.com– a website that helps connect female talent with jobs around the world.

But before she was both mom and company president, she says she didn’t realize how horrible she had been to other mothers. That is, before she had a child of her own. She’s now written a self-reflective piece on what she’s learned throughout her journey.

Zaleski, writing a column for Fortune.com, admits that while working as a manager at the Huffington Post and the Washington Post, she would judge mothers and question their commitment to their careers.

She says she would do things like schedule meetings at 4:30 pm, without thinking parents needed to pick their kids up from daycare. She also wouldn’t disagree when another editor said they should hurry up and fire a woman before she got pregnant.

For that, she says she’s sorry to all the mothers she used to work with. Specifically one editor at Time magazine she once dismissed for being a mother. Fast forward to today, the two now work together on PowerToFly.com, which has helped process more than one million dollars in paychecks for women who work from home.
