CARLINVILLE, IL- Dairy giant Prairie Farms has teamed up with Just Born, the company that produces popular Easter candy, PEEPS. Together they are releasing PEEPS- flavored milk in honor of spring. This is real, it is happening and it is terrifying.

Hitting store shelves this week, reduced fat Marshmallow, reduced fat Chocolate Marshmallow  and Easter Egg Nog milk flavors will certainly give you a sugar buzz. Looking at the nutrition labels, one serving size has 37 grams of sugar.  To put that in perspective, the serving size is 1 cup, which = 8 fluid ounces.  A 12 ounce can of Coca Cola has 39 grams of sugar.

Barq’s Rootbeer has a whopping 45 grams, and  Snapple half lemonade, half tea has an alarming 50 grams of sugar in a 16 oz bottle.  Typically when someone pours a beverage, they end up with 12-16 ounces in a their glass, not the recommended serving size.

The American Heart Association recommends that the average woman only intake 5 teaspoons of added sugar daily, while men get 9 teaspoons. 1 teaspoon= 4 grams of sugar. Ladies, that means you only get 20 grams a day and men, 36 grams.

Apparently, egg nog outside of Christmas is not a new thing, as seasonal nogs have been around since the 90’s. Prairie Farms is promoting “each glass of PEEPS® Easter Egg Nog boasts 5 grams of protein and 15 percent of the daily value of calcium, so go ahead and indulge. ”

While some might find this new candy flavored beverage exciting and delicious, others might find it overly indulgent and too sweet. For me? I’m going to go with the latter.
