HARTFORD -- A night out at the movies can cost the typical family a fortune. With average ticket prices between $8.25 and $8.50 (and Saturday night IMAX shows costing as much as $20), an outing can cost a fortune.

So, it deserves a laugh for how worried we acted in the early 1990s when Connecticut proposed adding a tax on top of already "rising" ticket prices.

In the first few years of the '90s, the average cost of a movie ticket was $4.15.

The highest grossing movies in 1991, according to IMDb, were:

  1. Silence of the Lambs
  2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  3. Disney's Beauty and the Beast

In 1993, the General Assembly repealed the sales and use taxes imposed on amusement and recreation services.
