HARTFORD – British journalist and TV personality Katie Hopkins has recently come under fire for using social media and television to attack former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s weight.

Hopkins, a writer for the Sun, first took her attacks to Twitter, tweeting negative comments about Clarkson’s weight on Feb. 20, saying “Jesus, what happened to Kelly Clarkson? Did she eat all of her backing singers? Happily I have wide-screen.” She added, “Darling, if you had a baby a year ago, that is not baby weight. It is fat. Quit calling it cute names to make yourself feel better.”

In an interview with Heat magazine, Clarkson, who gave birth to her daughter, River Rose in June 2014, laughed off the Tweets, saying “That’s because she doesn’t know me. I’m awesome! It doesn’t bother me. It’s a free world. Say what you will.”  She went on to clarify “I’ve just never cared what people think. It’s more if I’m happy and I’m confident and feeling good, that’s always been my thing. And more so now, since having a family —  I don’t seek out any other acceptance.”

Hopkins did a live, remote interview with Access Hollywood and defended her remarks, doubling down to add that “Ultimately, Kelly Clarkson is a chunky monkey. We can call it ‘baby weight,’ we can call it ‘puppy fat,’ we can call it ‘love handles,’ we can call it ‘muffin top,’ any of the nice, kind of soft, cuddly names we give it, but ultimately it’s fat. She’s fat. She needs to get out, eat less and move more.”

Clarkson has not responded to Hopkins’ latest taunts, but if the past is any indication, it is safe to say she will take the high road.
