BRIDGEPORT – After an investigation, detectives issued a warrant for a 37 year-old man in conjunction with the fatal shooting that occurred Feb. 20 near the corner of William and Ogden Streets.
Karim Skipworth, of 121 Hicks St., surrendered at Police Headquarters today on the warrant, which charged him with murder, carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal possession of a firearm.
“Detectives investigating this case worked day and night since the incident,” said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. “We owed that to the family and to our city. Detectives pursued every lead and followed the evidence where it took them. That led us to the suspect. The investigators did outstanding work.”
The victim of the homicide was Jose Lebron, 28, who was found fatally shot with a BB gun in his right hand and money in his left hand.
“Whatever the circumstances, a young man lost his life. We will not and we cannot tolerate senseless gun violence in our city,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “I am grateful to our detectives who worked nonstop to get a dangerous person off the street. We’ve made a lot of progress cracking down on gun violence. But, we still have work to do.”
Police also recovered cell phones and drugs in Lebron’s possession and in his vehicle. One of the recovered cell phones belonged to Skipworth.
The investigation revealed that Lebron arranged a meeting with Skipworth at Ogden Street and William Street on the night of the homicide, and robbed Skipworth of his money and cell phone when he arrived.
As Lebron fled the area, Skipworth fired shots and fatally wounded him.
