NEW LONDON — Two Coast Guard Cadets are dead and one injured after a car crash on Saturday.

The crash happened shortly after midnight on Route 31 in Hopewell Township, N.J. According to a Coast Guard spokesman, the crash happened when a car in the opposite lane collided with a car driven by First Class Cadet Joel MacArthur.

MacArthur was treated and released from the hospital for his injuries. The passengers of the car, First Class Cadet Soso Makaridze and Third Class Cadet Bersarian Gorjoladze, both died from their injuries.

Makaridze and Gorjoladze were both international cadets from the Republic of Georgia.

“The Academy community is grieving the loss of two of our cadets,” said Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz. “We are deeply saddened by their passing and are fully committed to helping the Corps of Cadets cope with this tragedy.”

The Academy is planning to have a memorial service and grief councilors on hand when the cadets return from their spring break on March 15th.
