NEW HAVEN – Two off-duty New Haven Police Officers helped to make an arrest Saturday, March 7, just after 11 a.m.

Miguel Aponte and Milton DeJesus were getting haircuts at Orlando’s Barber Shop on Grand Avenue. That’s when one of the barber’s reported a fight next door.  The Officers went to check it out and spotted a man holding a hand gun.

When the officers identified themselves as such, according to police, the man pulled out his gun. Police say a barber smacked it out of his hand, while another barber stepped on it so he couldn’t get it. The officers held him until additions cops arrived.

“A New Haven Police Officer is never off duty. Fast work by Officers Aponte and DeJesus took another gun off the street. We are particularly grateful to the merchants who stepped in to help. Their swift actions will not be forgotten,” said Chief Dean Esserman.

Police have identified the armed man as Ryan Ward, 19, of New Haven. Police say he pistol-whipped a victim several times. The victim was taken to Yale – New Haven Hospital for treatment.

The case is still under investigation.

Ward was charged with second degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a child, carrying a pistol without a permit and breach of peace.
