Sportswear company apologizes for ‘sexist’ washing instructions

HARTFORD – An Indonesian sportswear company has come under fire for making jerseys that contained what some are calling ‘sexist’  washing instructions. Salvo Sports has since apologized, but many people on social media are saying the apology is not good enough.

The washing information on the jerseys stated: “Give this shirt to a woman.  It’s her job.”

The jerseys were made for the Indonesia Super League team (Liga Super Indonesia), which is the highest professional level competition for soccer clubs in the country. The shirts quickly drew criticism when images started to pop up online. The company issued an apology on Twitter on Sunday, which, coincidentally or not, was International Women’s Day.

The tweets, translated from Indonesian to English said:

“The message is simply instead of washing it in the wrong way, you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable.

“There is no intention to humiliate women.”

Under the hashtag #SalvoSports, many users on Twitter are saying this apology, is not much of an apology.
