STAMFORD – After 75 minutes of hockey in the girls’ state championship game Saturday, including two overtime periods, Simsbury and the co-op team of East Catholic, Glastonbury and South Windsor were declared co-champions.
The Hartford Courant reports, the teams finished the second of two 15-minute overtimes tied 2-2 at Terry Conners Rink.
The players, huddled on their benches, assumed they would play a third extra frame, possibly dropping to four vs. four. They didn’t.
“The girls were disappointed. They wanted to play. They’re competitors,” Simsbury coach Paul Melanson said after the game. “They weren’t happy.”
The game ended just after 3:30 p.m. A boys game between Darien and Greenwich for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship was scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., but was delayed by the girls’ final. At the end of the second overtime, the rink, which had been letting fans in for the FCIAC championship, appeared full. The girls’ final was announced as a tie at about 3:40 p.m., when the rink announcer told both teams to line up at their respective blue lines.
