NEW HAVEN — The cold winter weather is now causing a problem with potholes on Connecticut roads. Potholes form when water on roads expands and contracts due to freezing and thawing.

DOT spokesperson Kevin Nursick told The Record-Journal that additional DOT crews are being sent out to repair potholes and frost heaves.

AAA is recommending drivers check their tires and suspension to make sure everything is working well.

If a pothole is unavoidable, drivers should go over the hole as slowly as possible.

AAA also asks drivers to be careful driving over puddles, which can ask a pothole underneath the water.
If you do hit a pothole, be mindful of any new noises or vibrations your car makes, or if your wheels seem out of alignment.

If you do notice a problem, AAA recommends having a qualified technician inspect your car as soon as possible. wheel alignment seems off.
