HARTFORD–Connecticut lawmakers are revisiting legislation that would allow physicians to prescribe medication to help terminally ill patients to end their lives.

The General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee was scheduled to hold a public hearing Wednesday on the latest bill. Similar proposals have died in the legislature’s Public Health Committee in the past two legislative sessions.

This year’s version of the bill would require an adult wishing to receive the medication to submit two written requests to their attending physician. No person serving as a witness to the patient’s request can be a relative by blood, marriage or adoption, or entitled to a portion of the patient’s estate.

Opponents of the bill say they don’t believe there is enough support to pass the legislation out of the Judiciary Committee this year.
