Hamden Mayor Jackson to resign next month for state position

HARTFORD — Governor Dannel Malloy appointed Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson to a position in the office of Policy Management Tuesday.

Jackson, 43, was named the Undersecretary for Intergovernmental Policy, which will help streamline state investments to urban communities. That position, which works with various towns and cities around the state, comes with a six-figure salary.

Jackson will be resigning from his position as mayor effective April 16. The following day he is set to start his new position at the state level.

“He’s done a great job for the state of Connecticut on two important panels- one considering our response to a natural disaster and one considering our response and made recommendations to a human disaster,” Malloy said at a press conference at the Legislative Office Building.

Jackson has received national attention recently for his role as Chairman of the Governor’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission. The commission spent the last two years investigating ways to help prevent future mass shootings after 26 people were killed in the Newtown tragedy in 2012. The commission released its final report last week.

“He saw the amount of work that went into the Sandy Hook Report but it was a lot of heavy lifting,” Jackson told Fox CT. “More than that, the governor and I have seen eye to eye on a lot more granular types of projects.”

The Democrat also served on the Governor’s panel that reviewed the state’s response to two damaging storms, including tropical storm Irene, in 2011.

Jackson will be making $151,000 per year in the new position, he said.

Jackson is in his third term as Mayor of Hamden. He announced he will not be seeking reelection this year during his budget address to the Hamden Legislative Council Monday night.
