UPDATE: The meeting was postponed because not enough people came out.

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac University is appealing a citation after it was slapped with a fine.  The town of Hamden said the school is in violation of an agreement to have enough housing on campus for the amount of students attending.

Thursday night, the two will hash it all out again at a hearing before the zoning board.

The issue of contention here has to to with the number of beds the school offers.  The town and school once agreed to provide a bed for every single student, with the intention of reducing the number of undergrad students living off campus in residential neighborhoods, but the town said that’s not happening.

According to town officials, QU has not constructed enough dorms to have a bed for every undergrad and the beds it does have are not filled. The university has said that it interpreted that as providing a bed for every student that wants one.

Since February the town’s issued fines to QU at a rate of $150 a day.  Quinnipiac is appealing the citation and tonight the Board of Appeals will hear that and its violation notices.

Hamden wants the University to commit to housing 95 percent of its students on campus, but the school has not agreed to that.  Right now, QU houses about 80 percent of students on campus. Those off campus students are what the town and its residents have been at odds over, clashing over partying and minor vandalism.

A solution or compromise could be worked out Thursday night at the Zoning Board hearing here at 7 p.m.
